Abstract
The role of diffractive optical elements is explored for combining the output of a laser diode array into a single diffraction-limited beam. Spatial filters, diffractive microlenses, specialized grating, and phase correction plates are described for establishing mutual coherence, performing aperture filling, and controlling the light from laser diode arrays.
