Bilirubin conjugation in a three compartment hollow fiber bioreactor

Abstract

A new hollow fiber bioreactor for potential support of patients in liver failure is presented. In this bioreactor, hepatocytes are entrapped in a three-dimensional collagen gel-matrix. Cells may be cultured at tissue density within this bioreactor. Metabolic criteria of viability included glucose and oxygen consumption. Bilirubin conjugation, a specific and clinically sensitive measure of hepatocyte function, was 0.14 pg/cell/hr in this system.
