Abstract

We present the results of some recent biaxial loading experiments on the transition between two homogeneously deformed variants of martensite. The size of the observed hysteresis strongly depends on the orientation of the specimen and on the presence of small imposed disturbances. We present a new constrained theory of martensite that accurately predicts the stable variant, but fails to quantitatively predict the hysteresis. We are thereby led to consider a mismatch energy arising at approximate interfaces. The experiments suggest a form of the mismatch energy that is significantly different from that used in the literature.
