Abstract
Autotransplantation of about 363000 pancreatic islets (i.e. ± 7000/kg body weight) were sufficient to establish a stable normoglycemic metabolic state in a patient with diabetes mellitus. Standardized methods for islet isolation, quality control and transplantation were applied. Despite a reduction in C-peptide levels up to 60% following glucagon stimulation normoglycemia could be sustained without the need of exogenous insulin.
