Abstract
Autonomic neuropathies are peripheral nerve disorders with selective or predominant involvement of autonomic small fibers. Etiologies include diabetes, amyloid, autoimmune, toxic, and inherited conditions. Diagnosis is made by the unique symptomatology and pattern of involvement combined with accurate autonomic and organ specific testing. Advances in diagnosis include improved standardized autonomic tests, and the understanding thereof, in addition to breakthroughs in genetic and autoantibody evaluation. Treatment advances include better management of neurogenic orthostatic hypotension, immunomodulatory therapy, and specific gene therapies of hereditary conditions such as amyloidosis.
