Automatic thresholding method for crop residue coverage and management

Abstract

An automatic thresholding method was developed to distinguish residue and soil from gray scale images and color images. The optimal threshold values for gray scale images were calculated automatically from the histograms. The principal component analysis method and direct thresholding method in red band images were used to find the optimal threshold values for color images. The automatic thresholding method allows quick and reliable measurement of crop residue coverage. Test results for indoor and outdoor images in the field were described.
