Abstract

This paper is an abridged version of the technical report Modeling, Sensing, and Control of Gas Metal Arc Welding: A Status Survey [42] which contains about 530 references. In this paper, efforts will be directed towards providing a status survey of the feedback control techniques as applied to gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process. To date, it appears that there are only two literature survey papers one [50] on expert robotic welding system, and the other [7] on sensory feedback control for robotic arc welding. While these surveys are focussed only on robotic welding, the proposed survey focusses exclusively on various aspects of automatic control for GMAW process. Some ideas about future directions will also be provided. The research survey will be conducted under various control techniques such as classical control, multivariable control, adaptive control, feedback linearization, iterative learning control, relative gain array, and intelligent control, including neural networks control, fuzzy logic control, neurofuzzy control, and expert systems control.
