Abstract

Patents (556) assigned to 15 wood-based firms were assessed over a 9-year span. The groups of firms considered were 1) diversified out of the industry, 2) diversified between paper and solid wood products, and 3) paper and allied products producers. Trends analysis indicated a decline in patented technologies involving papermaking and new chemicals, especially among firms serving primarily paper and allied products markets. Patented technologies involving packaging increased, most noticeably among firms diversified between paper and solid wood products.
