Abstract

The areal density limits for perpendicular magnetic recording is studied. The record field is approximately twice that obtainable in longitudinal recording owing to the image field generated by the soft underlayer. In the presence of signal processing improvements, it is suggested that the areal density limit of perpendicular magnetic recording with a soft underlayer should approach 1 Tbit/inch2.
