Abstract
Examination of transverse sections of the pistillate lemmas and paleas of 4 Zizania spp. disclosed that the intercostal regions of species with a chartaceous morphology such as Z. aquatica, Z. texana and Z. latifolia exhibited a single layer of thin-walled subepidermal fibres, whereas Z. palustris, with a coriaceous morphology, typically possessed 2 or more layers of subepidermal fibres.
