Abstract

In this letter, we explore the use of multiport patch antennas (MPPA) as configurable radiators in modern wireless systems for beamforming applications. We introduce an analytical design method based on the cavity model. This approach allows us to identify the relationship between input port excitations and the resulting radiation pattern. We illustrate mm-wave antenna design examples as practical use of our proposed method to achieve both 2-D beam scanning and multibeam capabilities with the MPPA. The outcomes of this proposed method are in good agreement with those obtained by computationally intensive full electromagnetic simulators.
