Abstract
Anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) is a dysplastic condition of squamous tissue caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) and is generally considered to be a premalignant stage of anal cancer. Most patients with this condition are asymptomatic but require risk stratification in order to structure prevention strategies, screening, treatment, and surveillance. While there is no definitive consensus on treatment guidelines, a general approach of targeted ablation for high-risk lesions in immunocompetent patients and a combination of close observation, topical agents, and focused ablation in patients with low-grade dysplasia or immunocompromised patients are accepted.
