The examination of potential and possible impacts of bioenergy development on paper and pulp industries has been carried out in a number of studies. It has found that the conversion of chemicals and paper mills to full biorefineries with new technologies, enable the industry to expand product options, boosting profit margins and improving environmental performance. A joint report of the US department of Energy and Agriculture, including the USDA Forest Services, enumerate a capacity for annual production of more than 1.3 billion dry tons of biomass in the US. The integration of a biorefinery with a pulp and paper mill enables the reduction of amount of biomass required to make a unit of liquid fuel versus stand-alone biofuel production. Another assessment of bioenergy affecting industries was done for European Commission that target to find out the growth in production of electricity from biomass, and also its use as renewable fuels.
