Patients who had sought treatment for alcoholism at a psychiatric clinic were similar to alcoholic relatives who had not sought treatment, except that depressive symptoms were more evident in the treated alcoholics. The implications with regard to the recognition of alcoholism as an illness by the general public are discussed.
