Abstract

After the publication of the ISNAR Agricultural Research Indicator Series (Cambridge University Press, 1989), this volume provides an in-depth analysis of the Indicator Series data as they relate to agricultural research policy. The first part addresses economic policy and investment in rural public goods; agricultural research in an international policy context; sustainability; and agricultural research in a variable and unpredictable world. The broad context of agricultural research as an ingredient in economic development is taken up in part II. Part III, public-sector agricultural research, looks at regional perspectives in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Pacific, China, Latin America, Caribbean and West Asia and North Africa. Private-sector agricultural research is discussed in part IV, and the final part looks at the challenges that face agricultural research policy makers as we move toward the 21st century. Chapters are abstracted separately. -from Editors
