Abstract

Novel laminated antiferromagnetically coupled (LAC) media structures for high areal densities have been proposed. It is shown that a larger Mrδ reduction can be achieved by adding another stabilizing layer on top of the two-layered LAC media structures. The new structure also provides a lower noise and a higher signal-to-noise ratio in comparison to the existing two-layered LAC media. Another novel structure with a larger thermal stability has also been proposed. This structure can provide very high thermal stability and very low Mrδ values. These novel structures have potential for ultra-high areal densities above 100 Gb-in2.
