Abstract

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a rare but specific syndrome that is associated with increased mortality. Determining the cause of ALF involves evaluating for common etiologies like toxins and drugs or uncommon ones like malaria or hepatitis E. Optimal intensive care, with a multidisciplinary team of specialists, is necessary in all patients with ALF and transfer of patients to a transplant center, when possible, is imperative and is strongly associated with survival.
