Abstract
Acute calculous cholecystitis is a complication of cholelithiasis, a condition that afflicts more than 20 million Americans annually with approximately 120,000 cholecystectomies performed for acute cholecystitis every year in the United States. This chapter discusses the clinical symptoms and diagnostic evaluation used to diagnose acute cholecystitis. Treatment surgical treatment of acute cholecystitis is also discussed with particular focus on the performance of safe laparoscopic cholecystectomy and techniques to manage the difficult gallbladder.
