Abstract

Through providing a nuanced definition of strategic recruiting, we advance a strategic recruiting system model that highlights the value of making decisions that attract talent necessary to overcome strategic challenges. We posit that a holistic recruiting perspective facilitates developing stronger human capital resources (HCRs) that optimize the opportunity to achieve competitive parity and discuss how this holistic recruiting model can help optimize HCR capacity to achieve strategically desired outcomes. We emphasize that strategic recruiting is most effective when it focuses on decisions around attracting HCRs to overcome specific strategic challenges. We discuss five areas that influence the effectiveness of generating the talent necessary to support the talent strategy: organizational inducements, metrics, high potentials, diversity, and talent intermediaries. The discussion addresses areas where research often underestimates the role that recruiting has in affecting the make-up or capacity of the HCR.
