Abstract

This chapter reviews a century or so of developments related to older people receiving care in settings other than their own homes, and presents a somewhat idiosyncratic view of current challenges and opportunities. Topics discussed include historical perspectives on nursing homes, assisted living, critiques of residential care for seniors, and social work and residential care.
