Abstract

An accurate volumetric method is described to extract small sediment samples from lake cores. A cylindrical section is sliced from the core and its center removed with a small boring device. The original sediment volume is not distorted, and sampling error is significantly less than that reported for other volumetric techniques. The method was developed to study absolute pollen concentrations, but is suitable for other microfossils as well.
