A Different Approach to the Analysis of Person‐Years Data

The observed mortality of a group of individuals often needs to be compared with that expected from the death rates of the national population, with allowance made for period, age, sex and race. This is achieved by the person‐years or subject‐years method. A different approach is proposed which leads to new test statistics and confidence intervals which may be used with small samples.
