A coupled inductor based single phase five level inverter with capacitor voltage balancing

Abstract

Conventional two level inverters have drawbacks like requirement of high voltage switches, high dv/dt and EMI problems when they operate at high voltages. Multilevel inverters overcome these drawbacks in high voltage and high power applications. In this paper, a coupled inductor based Five Level Inverter (FLI) is presented. The proposed inverter has features like less switch count, less number of capacitors, less charge control circuits and more reliability. Principle of operation and switching state selection in the proposed converter are given in detail. Simulation results are presented to validate the proposed idea.
