Abstract

This paper reports the experimental results of water solubility in San Carlos olivine single crystals with different iron content hydrothermally annealed under a pressure of 300MPa and at a temperature from 1000°C to 1300°C with 50°C increments with oxygen fugacity controlled by the Ni/NiO buffer. The water content was analyzed using infrared spectra in [010] direction of polished samples in crack-free and inclusion-free regions about 15 to 25 µm in diameter. From the FTIR analysis, it is observed that water content increases with iron content as well as temperature under the experimental condition we used. The implication of the test result to the dynamic process in earth mantle is discussed briefly as well.
