I am currently working on the strain engineering of a Basidiomycota yeast for expression of biocatalysts and biosynthesis of bioactive natural products from a field-to-lab Basidiomycota strain collection.
Using bioinformatics approach, I identify genes and gene clusters of a unique collection of Basidiomycota strains that I created by collecting mushrooms samples in Minnesota.
I isolate genes from liquid culture and clone them into plasmids for heterologous expression in various host systems (E. coli, Pichia pastoris).
Because of the specific genetics and biology of Basidiomycota, I am currently working on my own Basidiomycota host systems using CRISPR/Cas9 technology for expression of genes and gene clusters of interest.
