Research interests

Tom conducts genetics and breeding research focused on the improvement of the following crops:

  • Dry edible bean (Phaseolus vulgaris)
  • Industrial hemp and recreational Cannabis (Cannabis sativa)
  • Lettuce (Lactuca sativa)
  • Sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) 

Teaching

Tom focuses on teaching strategies emphasizing curiosity-driven active learning that help students develop a deeper understanding of the food system and the interconnections of its component parts.  He currently teaches courses addressing plant production systems, and the taxonomy and characteristics of food plants.
