Personal profile

Research interests

I'm a PhD candidate in bioinformatics studying under Dr. Ran Blekhman in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development. My thesis research is primarily focused on the microbial ecology of the human gut microbiome. I apply machine learning techniques to metagenomic data to quantify properties of the communities of bacteria living (mostly) in the large intestine, with an eye on linking the effects of those bacteria on host health.

I am also very interested in "meta-research" examining the ways in which biology is communicated. In particular, I'm interested in the growing popularity of "preprints"—manuscripts posted online prior to peer review—and how they are changing dynamics in scholarly publishing in the life sciences.
