Personal profile

Personal profile

Michael Milligan manages the Application Development Solutions group. In this role he leads a team of talented software developers who create and maintain applications both for internal MSI operations as well as for external clients and sponsored projects. As a scientific computing consultant, Michael Milligan aims to assist our research community in effectively using HPC resources and technologies.

At the intersection of these roles, he leads MSI's Interactive Supercomputing initiatives. A major product of this work is our collaboration with Project Jupyter and our Jupyter Notebooks gateway currently available as a public MSI Beta service.

As the former application software manager at MSI and a contributor to the Debian project, he has considerable experience with software licensing considerations.

Prior to joining MSI, Michael led the Flight Software Group for the EBEX suborbital experiment, and he continues to collaborate with the EBEX team.

Research interests

  • Interactive supercomputing -- novel workflows and software tools for visualization, data exploration, and iterative development using supercomputing resources
  • Python -- scientific computing, visualization, parallelization, data wrangling and informatics, reproducibility, and collaboration techniques
  • Software sustainability -- collaborative tools, software packaging, licensing considerations, open source best practices
  • Astronomy and astrophysics -- image processing, "big data" astronomy and survey science, simulation and modelling
  • GIS and spatial computing -- Michael has led MSI's collaboration with U-Spatial to develop HPC capabilities for geospatial applications
