Research interests

My scholarship focuses addressing the opportunity or achievement gaps that impact students’ learning in grades K-12. I am most interested in understanding the role of students’ motivation to learn, innovative ways to prepare K-12 educators as effective teachers and leaders, and the creation of reading assessments that are motivating and accessible to all students. Ways I engage in research include: (a) collaborating with teachers to study literacy teaching, learning, and assessment in classroom settings; (b) studying literacy acts such as discussion and reading and writing to learn as these acts are embedded in the context of classroom lessons; and (c) sharing methodological information on how to study teaching, learning, social interactions, and educational change, using qualitative and quantitative approaches.
