Personal profile

Personal profile

Craig Campbell (he/him) is a leadership and civic engagement community educator in the northeast portion of the state. He works out of the Cloquet regional office. Prior to coming to University of Minnesota Extension, Craig was an assistant teaching professor at Penn State University in lifelong learning and adult education. He has expertise in program planning, adult learning theory, teaching methods, qualitative research, and community-based action research.

As a young person, Craig grew up in the small rural community of Winslow (population 350) on the Illinois/Wisconsin border in the driftless region. Living in the shadow of the University of Wisconsin's "Wisconsin Idea," he internalized the importance of university Extension and outreach. Upon entering college, two main directives emerged that drive his practice to this day: access to learning and information, and equitable knowledge representation.

These directives provided a strong purpose that led to him obtaining an Ed.D. in adult and higher education (community development, international and popular education emphasis) from Northern Illinois University (NIU). At the intersection of good adult education and community development principles, Craig always begins his work by starting with the learner’s experience and moving outward together to co-create inclusive programs and opportunities.

Currently, Craig has finished coursework towards a Ph.D. in Indigenous studies (Indigenous research methods and knowledge systems emphasis) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). As an always-learning and ever-improving ally, he has also worked with Native learners in a variety of settings, including the University of Saskatchewan, American Distance Education Consortium (1994 Land Grant Tribal College and Universities coordinator) and Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University. Craig looks forward to collaborating with members of the five Nations that reside within the region in which he engages.

When not working, Craig enjoys camping, cooking, reading, cofffee, music, traveling, and family. He continues to develop his deep love of the Twin Ports area and beyond. Craig looks forward to connecting with members of his region’s communities, helping to co-create and co-facilitate positive growth in the area.
