Research interests

I study the community ecology of disease in a variety of systems. As an undergraduate, I worked on amphibian and macroinvertebrate communities in ponds and the frog-killing chytrid fungus. As a Ph.D. student, I studied how predation, competition, and rapid evolution shaped the size of epidemics in populations of zooplankton (Daphnia dentifera) in lakes. As a postdoc, I study how resource supply, vector behavior, and within-host interactions shape the transmission of aphid-vectored viruses (B/CYDVs) in grasses. Across these study systems, I approach my research from a set of three complementary perspectives. Observations from nature inspire questions, experiments test specific predictions, and mathematical models generalize theory. This iterative combination of field work, experiments, and modelling allows me to rigorously test and develop relevant ideas for the community ecology of disease.
